I too am a newbie and burned my first DVD this week. Here are some exact tips that my also help you....

    1) Downloaded Divx Movie.
    2) Ran AVI2VCD decompress tool. Found under Tools on the left side. This created a avi about 2 1/2 times larger than the original. I didn't use the mpg converter from this company, since it was quite slow.
    3) Ran TMPGEnc to convert the new avi to mpg.
    4) Used TMPGEnc to break the mpg's down to burnable size.
    5) Used Nero 5.5 to burn to CD.
    6) Played in DVD Player.

    Best of Luck!

You need to find and install the DivX codec (probably 3.11 alpha), it might even be on this site somehwhere...

These movies were probably encoded with DivX, and have an .avi extension. Once you load the codec, you should be able to play, probably decode too, no problem.
