I have a video that has another two file. One is the avi and srt. can i just burn both of these file as data on to a cd-r and play it? Meaning can the player plays the srt with the movie. thanks

Yes, just burn both files onto cd/dvd as data.
With the DVP642, you have to select the subtitle file, press the subtitle button on the remote, then select and play the movie. I'm now familiar with the 5140, so I don't know if it is similar or not.Google is your Friend -

It should load it automatically.
Keep your file names short. Also, I think you can't have a SRT file larger than 150kb.
