  1. I'm using Newsbin Pro to download from binary newsgroups. When I'm downloading the headers from a group I get 3Mbps which is my full connection speed. When I download files I'm only getting 1Mbps. Is there some setting that needs to be changed in NB Pro or is it something with my server? I'm using CableOne which is in South Mississippi.

not unusual for an isp to cap download speeds, but not headers from their own newserver. get a premium nsp such as easynews, giganews, UNS for better retention/completeness/coverage/speed.

  3. For Giganews, With the Platinum Unlimites @ $24.99 a month as well as limited plans they now, to quote:
    "September 19, 2006
Giganews, Inc. announced today a storage increase for single and multi-part binary newsgroups. Over the next few weeks retention in these newsgroups will start to grow to an unprecedented 90 days. Giganews’ current binary newsgroup retention of 70 days will increase day by day as the additional storage starts to fill with new articles."

90 days retention is darn good. and "Because Giganews does not expire articles in text newsgroups, retention of text newsgroups is currently over 1,150 days and grows day by day. "

Right now Usenetserver is having problems "

We are aware that users are getting slower than normal speeds. We are working to correct this as quickly as possible. We will post more information when it become available.

  4. Connections are cappted, thats why you let Newsbin open 10 connections, then you get 10x the speed.

That's assuming they let you. My ISP (PacBell) newsserver goes cuckoo if I let GrabIt open up more than 3 simultaneous connections.

  6. I hate to say this but get a premium Newserver. Pacbell isn't premium.

Good enough, good enough. 300 KBps throughput ain't something to laugh at either. Esp. I usually let Grabit run overnight any way.
