Well, I found these Verbarim DVD-R 16x cheap and I'd like to get a 25 pack of them, but can you burn them with a 8x read recorder? The verbatim site says you can't burn them with lower speed burners at least.
    prod id: 43522

    My burner: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=12979

Or is it only the write speed that matters when you choose DVD-R...?
Sorry, I'm not very good at this.

I actually thought my burner was 8x at write too, since it was listed as 8X dvd at the shop I bought it from a year ago, but I guess it's the reading speed only. At least TS-H552U is what it comes up as in the system hardware list.

  2. If you read the top of that page it says the TS-H552U is a 16x burner.

  3. To answer your question, most Verbatim 16X media is rated 1X-16X and I have found only one burner that actually does a quality job at 16X. Most should be burned at 12X and much of the current stuff I have found, especially the -R, should be at 8X. For anyone with an 8X burner, the problem will not be the speed as much as making sure the firmware takes the 16X media codes into account.
Still a few bugs in the system...

I use those Verbatim DVD-R 16x (prod. code 43522) all the time.

They burn fine in all of my 3 DVD burners at speeds of 4, 8 or 16X.
I also use them in LG DVD recorder to transfer-convert VHS video to DVD.
That's a good media, so go ahead - you should not encounter any troubles.

  5. I burn Verbatim 16X discs at 16X in a Liteon 1693 with no problems.

    Okay, thanks for the help!

Yeah, I guess my burner is 16X then.

I've got lots of 8x Samsung Pleomax DVD-R right now. The reason I'm buying new DVD to replace them is that I read that the pleomax media is not very good. Not that I've had a problem burning workable DVD, but they say you might not be able to store them for many years or even months.
But these Verbatim should be worth upgrading to, if I want to burn somewhat important things that I want to be able to read several years from now?
