Happened to be browsing the boxes checking out the new Internet Security Suites- there are some very good 3-user deals out there, but prices vary widely.

The THING is: according to the boxes on the 2007 Norton, McAfee & Trend IS suites, as well as the new Microsoft OneCare, Millenium Edition computers are no longer supported.

The 2006 editions are fast disappearing from shelves, apparently without being discounted.

Don't wait to the last minute to figure out what to do about this...

The OS is 6-7 years old now. I'm surprised it was supported as long as it was. WinXP is better anyway, has been since SP1 made it more stable.

Thanks for trying to be helpful, but I've learned that anyone still running ME will do so until their PC dies and they'll never upgrade.

I've run into a few of those myself.

Its time for ME to be gone. I still use it for ONE HARDWARE/SOFTWARE ONLY

It is my camcorder which is not supported under XP.

BTW, there is going to be a new OS in 2007

Not only do they stay with ME, but they don't realize the 15-20 different spyware apps installed on their systems as well.

  7. Norton 2006 only supported Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

I beleiev that AVG for one works on Win98 too.

  8. Talk to me when Norton Anti Virus 2003 is no longer being support by Symantec, then I'll worry

  9. If I were running 2003 NAV I'd already be worried it doesn't catch all the viruses that the newer versions catch. I'm not talking about Virus sugnature updates either. It just doesn't have the same detection engine. 2006 was able to clean things that the 2005 only complained about and then left you having to manually clean them. Many users did not have the skill level to work in the registry or even find hidden files.

I don't think anybody really likes ME, but there are some that are stuck with it on particular machines. XP takes twice the RAM & twice the HD space and is noticably sluggish on under 1 G machines. In my case its a Compaq laptop that just isn't worth a $100 OS upgrade, tho it functions fine as a wireless coffeeshop d/ler, and has USB2 & DVD builtin.
There seems to be two distinct takes on computering; some just like to get under the hood, others are more interested in specific jobs the computer does for them. I'm gonna wait til I see what Vista does to laptop prices before making any upgrades.

Thanks for the information. I was not aware the detection engine had changed significantly.

  12. Try Kaspersky Internet Security. It not only supports Win98/ME but is lightning fast compared to Symantec Internet Security. Plus, it is able to catch items, which SAV does not even notice.

It is slightly pricier though. You could try it out free for a limited duration before deciding on purchasing the registration.
