I KNOW this has been discussed before, but my search pulled up nothing.

I use a variety of program depending on how quickly (Xilisoft DVD Ripper) or good (VDub) I want. My problem is that I can't ever figure out which vob's to use/merge for the movie only.

    Is there a simple way?

You want to merge all the VOB files of the main movie to what ?

1 large VOB ? split into 2 large files, 1 large video file & 1 large audio file ?

And if you are just ripping the files into one large file with no re-encoding there is no diff. in quality.

I use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode and set it to "Enable Stream Processing" and "Demux" into seperate video & audio streams or leave it and you can rip it into one large VOB with everything.

If you are just looking for a way to just rip the movie only off the disc you can use DVDFab Decrypter or DVD Decrypter and select "main movie only" then do what you will after just the main movie files are ripped to your HDD.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but the others gave a couple of possible answers. If you just want to figure out which VOBs are the main movie, DVDshrink can extract just the main movie, then you don't need to figure it out.

For VOBs themselves, VTS_01_1.VOB would be the first video VOB and the rest of the video would be the others in that same series:

    VIDEO_TS VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
The first video play item, IFO, usually a copyright notice or a menu
VIDEO_TS.VOB The first video play item, VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO Title 01, IFO, usually the main movie
VTS_01_0.VOB Title 01, VOB 0, the menu for this title
VTS_01_1.VOB Title 01, VOB 1, the video for this title
VTS_01_2.VOB Title 01, VOB 2, if larger than 1 GB it will be split into several VOBs
    VTS_01_3.VOB Title 01, VOB 3
VTS_01_4.VOB Title 01, VOB 4, up to 10(0-9) VOB files if necessary
    VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO Title 02, IFO, usually movie extras
VTS_02_0.VOB Title 02, VOB 0, the menu for this title
VTS_02_1.VOB Title 02, VOB 1, the video for this title
    VTS_xx_x.BUP
    VTS_xx_x.IFO And so on
    VTS_xx_x.VOB
    VTS_xx_x.VOB
VTS_99_9.VOB Up to 99(1-99) titles with max 10(0-9) VOB files each
This from the DVD format shown in 'WHAT IS' DVD to the upper left on this page.

    And welcome to our forums.

Naw, 1 large that has all the "pieces" to convert to Xvid.

    Agreed

I don't want everything - just the movie for conversion. Although Shrink will reauthor just the movie - question is is it ALWAYS VTS_01_1 that starts themovie? That's my biggest problem.

THAT was what I was TRYING to say - right after I posted this I realized Shrink would re-author
and give me what I wanted. Just have to make sure the proggie I'm using will assemble the movie - that's what I meant by using VOBMerge to make one "large" vob being the complete movie.

Thank you for that - I needed a summary for this. I've been ripping and converting for about 4 years but always used a no-brainer.
