  1. Is there a program I can use that will allow my to download the windows updates to a folder inside of this program? I would be able to then run the program and install of the updates from it off of my flash drive or another type of media

    Thanks,
    Jason

Similar to what aedipuss posted, I use Autopatcher and you can DL them all to a flash drive or a CD and install the ones you want, when you want. http://www.autopatcher.com/

EDIT: I see roma_turok also linked to Autopatcher. One warning, the whole update, like of XP is a big file. It will take quite a long time on dialup. But you can also get it from P2P sources.

And if you want to dig around a little on Microsoft's site, you may find in the corporate/business area a file for most of the updates in one package that you can download to disc. But Autopatcher or the software patch site are a lot simpler.

  4. How do add updates to autopatcher so I can update it myself?

NVM: You can drag it into the /modules/critical folder.

You usually need to start with the full update if you are doing a new install of the OS.

It's big, about 257MB. These are all the updates including SP2, if I interpret it properly: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=486480

From that point, you just install the updates. September is the latest update. It is not the full version. Sorry, it's confusing to me, also. http://www.autopatcher.com/

Blame MS for most of that. All the MS updates combined are almost as big as the original XP OS file.

If someone has better info, please correct me. I like the program, but you have to dig around a little in their forums to understand about the full versions and the upgrades. Maybe it's just me, but I think they could make it all a little clearer.

The good part is that it won't install anything that you already have. And watch out for the components, WGA and the addons. If you don't want or need them, don't install them. Some are good, some are problematic. But it will ask you what you want to install. Just pay attention.

If you have SP2, and you have dialup, you want to study their forum a little to avoid the large files if you don't need them. If you have broadband, DL the August full and the September updates and you should be set. Then just check in occasionally for the new updates. Or use MS after you have everything up to speed.
