Recently, after a relentless battle of the codecs, mpeg2 decoders and the war on spyware, I finally gave in. Its been way too long since my last reload and the introduction of my leadtek dvt2000h tuner card was the last nail in the coffin. I could not record DVB to an editable file. It contantly complained of anachronyous time stamps and i could never sync audio after cutting out ads unless I created multiple files then joined them together.. like a two day process to get a hours show to dvd.

After cleaning all spyware and removing all startup programs and services that were not required I noticed my computer having terrible issues caused by codecs alone, I removed every codec on my pc and reloaded only windows defaults through the add hardware in control panel and used that windows tool to assign my mpeg2 decoder. but every time a window refreshed or another task started on my pc, it was like it was loading everything all over again.

So with no way to use my capture card easily and my codecs hammering my pc i took it out the back and shot it in the back of the head. I reloaded windows (my disc is before serive packs) and 5 hours of patches and updates later I'm running EI7 and windows media player 11.
I only installed divx, xvid, huffy and of course wmv. No decoders and no Directshow and while I'm still having trouble with my leadtek captures my pc is running 200x better then before.

Why then is it that codecs decoders and directshow's play such a huge roll in pc performance.

The "200x" increase in performance wasn't just the result of your codecs. After reloading windows, your registry is most likely half the size that it was before. Increasing performance and most noticeably decreasing bootup times.
