What is the best software for cutting and joning Xvid movies? I tried using Tmpeg and virtual dub but it doesn't seem to work,it keeps giving me errors saying it can't do it? I installed Xvid 1.1 but it still won't work...any suggestions?

VirtualDub should work, it does for me. It's one of the better AVI editors out there. However Xvid was not made to edit. You can only cut on the keyframes unless you want to re-encode those parts. Xvid has a keyframe every 300 frames by default, so frame accurate editing is very difficult. In VirtualDub those little key symbols let you jump to the next keyframe. Done that way, you can just save it out with as a Direct stream copy, which is very quick.

If you have MP3 VBR audio, VirtualDub and most MPEG encoders will choke on that. If that's the problem, you can save it out as a WAV and re-encode it to CBR then add it back in before editing. The VBR will likely cause sync problems anyway.

    What was VD's specific error?

    And welcome to our forums.

party30 never said avi though. I agree if it is in an avi container then VDub/VDubMod is a good way to go. There is also avidemux.

(No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format.) That's the error it gives me when I try to play it in Vdub and when I try to skip to a certian part to cut out it won't let me.

Drop the file into Gspot and see what it says. If it's AC3, you need the AC3 ACM Decompressor. The skipping may be the keyframes or another problem.

celtic_druid, I still have the problem of calling a Xvid a AVI instead of a MPEG-4 codec. Just habit I'm trying to cure.
