Repackaged opensource and freeware apps that require no installation (other than unzipping). You can put them on your USB drive for portable apps whever you go. The site is just starting out, but they have a few goodies that merit them a visit: Portable Gimp -> the famous image editing program, and a Portable FireFox 2.0Beta, which allows you to test the app without disrupting your existing Firefox 1.x installation.

And that site pointed to some other sites

Thanks, there are some nice programs there. I noticed Audacity portable and OpenOffice, both which would be handy to have on a disc or flashdrive. The OpenOffice version will also run on Win95 computers.

Right on, redwudz. I always hesitate installing a new app that has an actual installation routine - my registry is bloated enough.

Just found a good one http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm

FastStone Capture is a powerful, flexible and intuitive screen-capture utility. It allows you to capture anything on the screen including windows, objects, full screen, rectangle regions, freehand-selected regions and scrolling windows/web pages. It has innovative features such as a floating Capture Panel, hotkeys, resizing, cropping, text annotation, printing, e-mailing, screen magnifier and many more.

And they have a portable version for download

Similar to the U2 operating environment that SanDisk has been using on their USB drives except it looks like it doesn't need a seperate partition on the device. I've been using U2 on my USB drives for a while and it works really well. Best part is that many of the applications run on our company's locked-down computer images since all the components are running from the USB device.

Mostly I use it to carry around my Outlook data, Firefox and its bookmarks, Thunderbird for my personal email, and Trillian. Haven't found much use for a lot of the others since I'm really only using my two laptops and two workstations at home most of the time and they all synch with each other anyway.

This is great! Our computers at work are completely locked, there is no possibility to install programs or codecs. (We are not even able to run defrag). By loading my USB memory stick with portable versions of GIMP, Firefox and VLC I can still use the computer the way I want to.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

rallynavvie, do you use SynchingThunder or any other software to sync between different Thunderbird installs? I have 3 Thunderbird installations, and I did try Synching Thunder, but it was a little bit too buggy.

  9. I've used stuff from this site, I have portableFF, Filezilla, NVU, Gimp, and Gaim. You can also make programs like Notepad++ portable by just installing them on your flash

Portable Software is the way to go. Especially VLC. Its saves a lot of time looking for codecs.
