On Archive.org, there are some movies that I will use in my production. The downloaded movies all carry an MPG extension. I can play both audio and video from an MPG file in QuickTime.

The problem is when an MPG file is imported in FCP or Premiere, only video shows up. I have tried to use VirtualDub, VLC and QuickTime to convert an MPG to AVI or MOV so as to access both audio and video. So far, I have no good luck. Does anyone know how to edit an MPG file from archive.org?

    Many thanks.

Drop the file into Gspot 2.60 and see what it has to say about the audio and video format. If it's a MPEG, it may be AC3. (Dolby Digital audio) You can decode AC3 with VirtualDub Mod and the AC3 ACM Decompressor. Other possibilities are DTS, PCM(uncompressed audio), MPEG-1 Layer2 and maybe a few other odd formats.

    And welcome to our forums.

EDIT: There are a lot of different formats there. It may not be a MPEG, at least not MPEG-1 or 2. But Gspot should tell you.
