    i would like to capture straight to mpeg 1

    Bad move mate:

    Always capture in YU12 320*240 NO RECOMPRESSION CD QUALITY AUDIO. That gives you the best quality, then convert to MPEG1 or MPEG2. Otherwise use something like powerVCR
