great movie, but the avi is also taking up 22.5gb of harddrive space. id like to make a vcd of it, or put into a mpeg (or other high quality) format that i can transfer to my laptops harddrive over lan before trips.
what are some recommended programs or steps (i noticed there are a lot of options in the convert section), should i go svcd or just vcd (the origional is vhs, not dvd).
i plan on burning this in nero 5.5, or is that not as good as some other options on the market.
this newbie thanks everyone for their help!

Nero is fine for burning.
22.5gb of HDD space, sounds like its been compressed a little has it? You use PIC Motion JPEG I am guessing?
I recommend VCD, thought thats just me, I find its bareable enough.
If you only captured it at 352x240 then your best bet will be VCD yes. Although if you went the extra mile and recorded at 480x480 an SVCD would be better.
Use TMPG and load up the NTSC template (either SVCD or VCD) and then encode away, hope I helped..

duckster,
and might i add to cyber's post, if you're pressed for space, and 480x480 is
pushing you to your limit, then try 352x480 captures to get that extra bit of space
during capturing. When you encode your clip, you really wont save space if you
encode to 352 or 480 width.

It depends on what you captured from whether it is worth going to VCD or SVCD. If it is of very high quality i would go for SVCD but if it is of OK-High quality i would just use a VCD or maybe even an XVCD. See how to do these with the guides on the left side of this site. Best tools are TMPGEnc to convert and Nero 5.5 to burn as (S)VCD.

i was having some trouble with premiere when i was capturing, as it was thru my dv cam, so it was capturing in full dv resolution, 720x480, full, uncompressed avi.
the video does look nice, so ill give an svcd a go.
thanks for your advise, ill let you all know how it went!
