I have used DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter to backup DVDs in the past with no problems.

Having recently reinstalled my operating system and loading all the programs again, I tried to backup a DVD. When using either DVD Shrink or Decrypter, I receive a message saying that it is region protected. I cant remember if I have ever tried to backup a region1 DVD before so am not sure if this a common problem, although I would have thought both programs would bypass region protection.

I have never encountered this before, and wondered if there was any other program that would bypass the region protection.

Incidentally, I have updgraded my nero software to Nero 7. Could this be what is causing the problem?

    Thanks for any help.

Your DVD drive's region is probably locked to your specific region. You could try loading region free firmware (http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php) into your drive or use something like dvd 43 (http://www.dvd43.com/).

  4. You'll only need to modify the region of your DVD drive if you want to PLAY different regioned movies on your computer. This is not necessary if you want to make region free back-ups.

When you put a different region DVD into the drive and the computer asks if you want to change the region in order to play it, just click cancel. From there you should be able to back the dvd up as usual. The DVD back-up will have no region so that disc will play on your computer.

I asked a similar question a little over a year ago here...

DVD Decrypter with non-hackable Region 1 DVD Burner question

You also might want to look into RipIt4Me which uses DVD Decrypyter, DVD Shrink, and FixVTS, all in one automated package.
