    Hello everyone,

I have a philips DVD player DVP642/37 manufactured in march 2005.

I am trying to play DVD-R and DVD+R and it doesn't work. How do I get the right firmware and what's the process to follow (if that's what I'm supposed to do).

Thanks a lot for any help.

  2. It should work with the existing firmware. It does prefer DVD+R according to the manual although I never had problems with -R discs. Mine won't play double-layer +R discs.

Your player works normally with pressed discs? Do your burned discs work okay in other players?

Thank you for the quick answer Constant.

My player works perfectly with any CD-R burned disk.

I burned on a DVD-R today, and the burning went perfectly fine using Burn4Free. It didn't work on the Philips and I don't have other players to try it unfortunately.

    What should I do?

    1. what brand of media are you using? Media makes big difference. Stick with Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden.

    2. Keep burn speed at 4x.

    3. I don't know much about burn4free but try using something more mainstream like Nero and use the DVD-Video template. Actually, the 642 can even recognize as a DVD a disc burned as a DVD-ROM - most players won't - but if changing the media and burn speed doesn't work, try that.

I have a 642 with the 0530 firmware (much older) that plays everything except DVD-RAM.

I have two of the 642's and I can play +/-R discs without any problems. If the player can't read any DVD at all, then it sounds like the drive if faulty. CD and DVD playback use different lazers, so CDR playback doesn't aid the troubleshooting.

  6. Try your burned dvd on another player to see if it's the player or the media

I'm having a similar issue with my DVP 642/37. It plays everything fine, but I just tried to play a couple of DVD-Rs and it came up with "No Disc." I tried the discs in my Xbox and they play fine, so I know the discs burned okay. I've tried finding a firmware to update my player, but I cant find anything.

EDIT: Actually, disregard this post. It seems that my DVP player isn't playing a single thing anymore, including studio-produced discs. I guess I'm going to have to call Philips.
