My sony DVD-ROM (DDU 1612) has stopped reading DVD-R's, PC freezes.

No new software added, just worked one day but not the next.

Ran nero info tool and the only thing I think looks unusual is it does not show the date
of installation or the serial number. (nero info tool does show this info for my pioneer writer)

It will still read DVD-RW's , CD's and original DVD's.

I have tried uninstalling it then reinstalling it but no joy.

any help would be great.

Have you tried flashing the firmware? If it we're me I'd flash it with the latest offical version for the DDU 1612.

Have you change DVD-R media type? Or has it stopped reading DVD-R's that your were previously able to read?

This is one of the first signs of drive failure. Being that it's an old drive, yet capable, it is sad to let it go but it might be time to upgrade to a newer drive before these lock ups cause further software problems.
