    Hi

I’m trying to rip subtitles from DVDs that have been ripped on my HDD & encountered SOME PROBLEMS. I prefer 1 file to cover the subtitles to the whole movie rather than multiple files. I prefer to output .srt or any other easy one to handle, maybe .sup or .idx?

    SUBRIP 1.16 & 1.52
See screenshot 01 with my observations & comments in the picture.

    DVDSUBEDIT 1.33
The OCR function makes some mistakes with spelling [too many to manually correct them!] such as:
    - general spelling errors (but not much)
    - words stuck together i.e. “beentogether” should be “been together”

    SUBTITLE CREATOR 2.0.4
I got NET FRAMEWORK 1.1 installed on my XP computer (according to Add/ Remove Programs) but when I click to on the .exe, a black DOS windows quickly appears & disappears and nothing is installed or opened. I’m not even sure if SC2.0.4 can rip subs.

Are there any other software that can do good subtitle ripping without encountering OCR problems with spelling and punctuation?

SRT2SUP is not for download anymore.

I’m not interested in making subtitles from scratch or editing original subtitles, I just wanna rip them preferably retaining all ITALIC text and special characters like musical notes.

Assuming that I made a multi-movie disc with DVDSHRINK->TMPG DVD AUTHOR, how can I add back that subtitle file on the DVD movie before burning it on DVDR?

I just want to add 1 or 2 [OPTIONAL NOT FORCED] subtitle streams only, default will be NONE. Not sure if I can do that in PGCEDIT/VOBBLANKER.

At the moment, all the movies I ripped are NTSC but will make PAL ones later on. So framerate accuracy is also important.

    CHEERS.

You haven't said what you plan to do with the subs, have you? To answer your question, VobSub Configure (comes with the VobSub package) can convert to IDX/SUB format with no OCR at all. Open the IFO for the VTS that contains your movie. They are image based, as opposed to text based, and may or may not be what you want.

If your goal is to get the subs back into the movie (?), then I don't know why you're going through all this in the first place. Get the subs (and video, audio, chapters) in SUP format using PGCDemux and use the SUP files with an authoring app that accepts them, such as Muxman or IFOEdit (both freeware). I don't use it, but I don't believe TDA supports any subs at all, does it? So why are you using it?

I just want to add 1 or 2 [OPTIONAL NOT FORCED] subtitle streams only, default will be NONE. Not sure if I can do that in PGCEDIT/VOBBLANKER.

You add sub streams during the authoring stage. Neither PGCEdit nor VobBlanker is an authoring app.

IMO, SubRip is the best way to get OCRed subtitles off a DVD. Since the OCR engine doesn't know an A from a k when it starts, you have to teach it what character it has found, but only once for each rip - Once you've told it that an A is an A, it will not ask about that character again.
After some teaching on your part, SubRip knows what all characters look like, and can carry on on its own.
After doing a disc, you can save the character matrix for reuse - if you encounter a DVD with the same typeface later on.

It looks like your Subrip program is corrupted. Try uninstalling the program through the Window's control panel, then re-downloading the latest version.

You DO know that you initally have to train your OCR program, don't you? That may be why you keep getting the "Subtitle can't be processed" message.

use VSRip to extract/rip subs to idx/sub format, no ocr is performed.

if youre ripping the subs to add them to another dvd you can demux them using pgcdemux(no ocr is performed) and then add them to the other dvd with subtitle creator(pgcdemux/muxman/vobblanker)

A few points about VSRIP & SUBTITLE CREATOR & other related proggies.

    VSRIP 1.0.0.6
I can convert a whole movie’s subtitles to .SUB or .IDX file. But when I import it into DVDLAB PRO, nothing happens. DVDLAB PRO doesn’t take .IDX files. SUBTITLE WORKSHOP says the .SUB file from VSRIP is a “bad subtitle or an unsupported format”.

    SUBTITLE CREATOR 2.0.4

    PGCDEMUX 1.0.2.5
I can get a .SUP file for the whole movie’s subtitles from PGCDEMUX but DVDLAB PRO does not take these. SUBTITLE WORKSHOP also does not take these. DVDSUBEDIT can take .SUP but read the problems with DVDSUBEDIT above.

    SUBMAGIC [Version unknown]
This is not a sub ripper, just a subs fixer / editor. Doesn’t take .SUP or .IDX files. Tried to open the .SUB file from VSRIP with SUBMAGIC but got error message. Tried to import the .SRT file from DVDSUBEDIT to fix the spelling/grammar etc but doesn’t fix every single one I’m afraid. Gotta do it manually like SUBTITLE WORKSHOP.

But in general, are all subtitle ripping methods unreliable? Can you keep all ITALIC and special characters like musical notes when subtitle ripping & importing it later on?

    CHEERS!

I never said they did. I said to use an authoring app that supports SUP formatted subs, such as Muxman or IFOEdit. What's the big deal with DVDLab Pro anyway? If you want to use subs in it, you have to perform the OCR. You asked about subs that keep the italics and special characters, etc. That means image based subs, which means either SUP or IDX/SUB files.

By the way, you can get the italics and special characters if you OCR to SSA subs (not SRT). You may wind up with a different font, size, positioning, etc, though. I don't know how DVDLab Pro handles them, nor do I care.

But in general, are all subtitle ripping methods unreliable? Can you keep all ITALIC and special characters like musical notes when subtitle ripping & importing it later on?

No, they're not all unreliable. SUP formatted subs are the original DVD subtitles, as are the IDX/SUB subs. I don't know of any authoring apps that accept IDX/SUB. There are several that accept SUP. DVDLab Pro just doesn't happen to be one of them. I don't know why you're trying to reinvent the wheel. These authoring apps aren't going to bend to you. You have to adapt to them.

    lets see:

you have dvd A with subs

    dvd B without subs

all you have to do is demux the subs from dvd A, demux video and audio from dvd B and mux demuxed subs/audio/video with muxman

    its really that simple

    no ocr

if dvd B has menus, demux the main movie and then mux the demuxed subs/mainmovie demuxed video/mainmoviedemuxed audio and author with muxman, then you can replace the main movie from dvd B with the output from muxman with voblanker(replace PGC)

    Hi

I understand how to demux (with PGCDEMUX) & remux (with MUXMAN).

I made a movie compilation DVD with 3 movies using DVDLAB PRO 2.

First Play menu is the Movie Selection Menu with 3 buttons. When I select a movie, this leads to the CHAPTERS/SCENE SELECTION menu pages for that movie: Movie 1 got 7 menu pages, Movie 2 got 7 menu pages & Movie 3 got 4 menu pages. All menus are non-motion & got no sound in the background.

Each movie only contains one English audio stream. I tried to add 2 subtitle streams in the project but DVDLAB PRO 2 doesn’t take .SUP files. So I decided to go ahead & burn the project to DVD without the subtitles.

Tested in DVD-ROM & stand-alone DVD player, I was happy with the quality and the A/V synch. No subtitles on it so I decided to add it AFTER I got the DVDLAB PRO 2 output on my HDD. Picture DVDLABPRO_002 shows that output in directory (before processing in VOBBLANKER):
    E:\ZZZ_DVDLAB_PRO_OUTPUT

From what I gather by ricardouk’s advice above, I need to demux each movie, remux each movie back with the subtitles I want, open the original compilation in VOBBLANKER, replace each movie with the remuxed movie & let VOBBLANKER process them all. Sounds easy.

I created a folder for each remux movie at these directory (see picture DVDLABPRO_003):
    E:\ZZZ_TOON_MOVIES_REMUXED\TITLE1_GARFIELD
    E:\ZZZ_TOON_MOVIES_REMUXED\TITLE2_FATAL
    E:\ZZZ_TOON_MOVIES_REMUXED\TITLE3_LTUNES

I tested each remixed movie one at a time in POWERDVD. Each movie was in perfect synch, i.e. movie with audio & audio with the subtitles. As muxing experts would know by now, each remuxed movie is one big chapter as MUXMAN doesn’t create chapter points or import chapter points.

Now that I got the remux movies, I opened the original compilation in VOBBLANKER, replace each movie with the remuxed movie & let VOBBLANKER process them all. See picture DVDLABPRO_004 & DVDLABPRO_005 for the settings I used. I didn’t tick Input Folder as I knew things may go wrong [which it did!] and selected a different directory:
    E:\ZZZ_DVDLAB_PRO_OUTPUT_VOBBLANKER_ADJ

I clicked on the Process button at the bottom & waited. The output was not good. The buttons on the First Play menu worked OK. When going into the Scene Selection, only Scene 1 button for each movie worked … basically it’s a “start the movie from the beginning” button. All other scenes buttons leads me back to the First Play menu. When I choose to play Scene/Chapter 1, I can watch the whole movie just like that & use forward/rewind but if I press the next button it also leads me back to the First Play menu. Worse of all, still no subtitles!

Picture DVDLABPRO_006 shows the VOBBLANKER output.

The VOBBLANKER process log looks like this:

I guess the replace function in VOBBLANKER is not enough. I would need to update the .IFOs or .BUPs files or something to include information about the subtitles. Now how the hell do I do that? Not even sure why VOBBLANKER can say Number of Cells lower in replacing title.

Something tells me I need to use IFO UPDATE & IFOEDIT/PGCEDIT or other software in addition to VOBBLANKER!

    CHEERS!

    Hi

    Here's Picture 005.

  13. As muxing experts would know by now, each remuxed movie is one big chapter as MUXMAN doesn’t create chapter points or import chapter points.

Of course it does. It's an authoring app, isn't it? When demuxing using PGCDemux, the Celltimes.txt it gives you contains the cells/chapters. When authoring with Muxman, go File->Import Chapters to use the Celltimes.txt file. Go back and do it over again, and then your scenes/chapters menus will work.

Worse of all, still no subtitles!

Did you test the 3 smaller DVDs into which you first muxed the subs? And do the subs for those work? I expect they do. Only after doing the Replace in VobBlanker they don't work, correct? That's because that DVD (the one out of DVDLab Pro) never had any subs in it to begin with. They have to be "turned on" in the IFOs. The best and easiest way to do that is with PGCEdit. Open the DVD in PGCEdit, double-click on each video in turn, find the subs section in the new screen, click on the number 0 sub, select "Set" and OK your way out of there. When you have all 3 done, Save and Test.

I guess the replace function in VOBBLANKER is not enough.

Yes it is. Once you have the chapters in your videos, it'll work fine. The IFOs will get updated automatically. User error.

    Hi

They work but all subs are in PINK now.

How do I fix this ?
    Quote Quote
  15. Remember when you opened the finished DVD in PGCEdit? Do it again and double-click on the various videos in turn. In the new screen, instead of doing what you did last time, go to the CLUT (Color LookUp Table). That's the 4x4 block of colors looking something like a Rubik's Cube. Make sure you remember the colors you have now for the outline and main color. Find them in the CLUT, click on them, and change them to whatever you like (maybe a black outline and grey or white or pale yellow main color). OK your way out, do it for the 2 other videos, Save and Test.

You can do the same thing using DVDSubEdit. You can also do it by Exporting the colors from the old DVD and Importing them into the New DVD. You'll see the Export and Import buttons below the CLUT. Since there were no subs in the old DVD, that way may not be useful to you in this case, but remember it for the future. I find the way I first described the easiest and fastest.

    HI again.

My previous compilations since my last post here were ok but I just encountered a slight hitch.

I tried to use MUXMAN with a CELLTIMES.TEXT file that looks like this:

    10580
    22000
    30911
    40290
    46305
    53266
    62125
    70175
    76545
    87941
    96631
    108625
    121860
    132985
    140420

This movie contains 16 chapters. It’s a NTSC movie.

After muxing, I tested that re-muxed movie with POWERDVD. The movie only ran for the first chapter which is about 5mins 52 secs and then stopped. The actual running time should be 1h 18mins appx.

    Here is the MUXMAN log:

    Any explanations?

    CHEERS.

  19. Any explanations?

No. What happens when you just play the vob? Does it go past that point? What happens when you play the DVD using a different player, perhaps MPC or VLC, if you don't have WinDVD? You could always burn it to DVDR (or RW if you have one) and test it in your standalone.

What happens when you replace it in the original retail DVD using the Replace button in VobBlanker (if this is reencoded from a retail DVD)?

Possible fixes include doing a Get VTS in IFOEdit and/or running the vobs through FixVTS.

Well in the movie’s remux folder are 3 VOB files (the movie spreads over 3 VOBs I guess).

VTS_01_1 .VOB is about 1gig in size. If I click on it, the movie runs from the beginning up to 33:25 appx. None of the subtitles work here.

VTS_01_2 .VOB is about 1gig in size. If I click on it, the movie runs for 33:10 appx. None of the subtitles work here.

VTS_01_3 .VOB is about 380mb in size. If I click on it, the movie runs for 11:37 appx. None of the subtitles work here.

Same applies in WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER.

I’ve uploaded the VIDEO_TS.ifo & VTS_01_0.ifo from the remuxed movie folder.

What happens when you replace it in the original retail DVD using the Replace button in VobBlanker (if this is re-encoded from a retail DVD)?

As mentioned before, I use DVDLAB PRO 2 to make the compilation. All four movies from this first output (where I excluded the subtitles for later replacement) played fine & all the chapter points are where I want them to be. Even movie 4 plays full in length with chapters.

Here’s the VOBBLANKER log when I replaced all 4 movies with the remuxed-subtitles versions:

I tested movie 1 to 3 (VTS 1 to 3) & all rare ok & all the chapter points are where I want them to be. No subtitles yet in any of them as I want to get movie 4 fixed before going into PGCEDIT.

I tested movie 4 (VTS 4) by going into its Scene Selection, only Scene 1 button worked … basically it’s a “start the movie from the beginning” button and it only ran 6:00 mins long from the beginning (strange as the remuxed movie on its own ran 5:52 appx). If I press the next button it leads me back to the First Play VMG menu. All other scenes buttons leads me back to the First Play VMG menu.

    OH ...

I’ve enclosed the picture of the output VOBBLANKER gave me that coincided with the VOBLANKER log above. As you can see, the VTS_04 VOBs are a LOT LESS in size than the as the remuxed movie on its own.

IF you need to see the IFOs for this output, LET ME KNOW!

SORRY FOR THE QUICK RESPONSES MODERATORS.... but we can only post 1 thing at a time.

    CHEERS!

  23. Something happened with the original authoring of the 4th movie:

Even though your Muxman log looked OK, there's only one chapter. I'd suggest first reauthoring with Muxman. If, when you test it out, the same thing happens, then I'd next suggest authoring with IFOEdit (at the top, DVD Author->Author New DVD). If still no good, then I'd suspect the M2V as the culprit. Either that or the original Demux. You may have to redemux and reencode.

    Hi

Ok .. that worked with IFOEDIT … CHEERS!

But I now got a problem with CUTTING in VOBBLANKER.

I ripped the MOVIE ONLY with DVDSHRINK with BEGIN/END cuts. The result was a movie with 31 chapters.

From that, I then cut out about 50 seconds from the middle of the movie in chapter 18 using VOBBLANKER.

    This is the VOBBLANKER log:

When I tested it in POWERDVD, all were in synch: video with audio, audio with subtitles.

When I demux (PGCDEMUX) & remux (IFOEDIT), the audio & video are in synch. However, subtitles are only in synch from the beginning up to the point I chose to cut out that 50 seconds (somewhere in chapter 18). After that it seems the subtitles are delayed by 50 seconds. Oh .. and the colour of the subtitles changes AGAIN.

    Any explanations?

  25. Explanations? No, not I. Better people than I might be able to tell you why it happened. I don't even understand 1) why you felt the need to cut 50 seconds from the middle of the movie, and 2) why you had to demux, but I guess you have your reasons.

You know how to fix the subtitle colors by now. Getting the subs after the cut back in synch will be difficult. I'd suggest not cutting the 50 seconds out of the movie in the middle. Also, your problems could be related to doing the earlier cuts using DVDShrink. Maybe start over, and this time make all the cuts using VobBlanker.
