I've seen on countless occassions where a character is looking himself in the mirror and there is nothing behind him even though the mirror reflection is focal. Can please tell me how its done?

Smart angles and false rooms, or visual effects. In a studio setting you can build rooms with unnatural perspective that looks normal on camera, but in reality is distorted. With motion control you can do one take with the actor on one side of the mirror in front of a black space, then repeat the move exactly with the actor in front of the morror, then bring the two together in post.
