  1. I am editting a wedding video.
One of the cameras was set to 16:9 while the other 4 where 4:3
I would like to crop the video from the 16:9 to 4:3

How would I go about doing that with VirtualDub or another tool.

I was looking at the Filters for Virtual Dub, and the Null filter specifically.
But I couldn't identify what the values would be for the offsets.

    True 16:9, or 16:9 letterbox ?

Either way, you are going to have to crop and resize substantially, so the 16:9 material will most likely be a lot softer than the 4:3 material.

Assuming NTSC (no location has been given)

For letterboxed 16:9, crop 60 from the top and 60 from the bottom, then zoom in to fill a 720 x 480 frame.

For true 16:9, resize vertically to 360 high, then zoom in to fill 720 x 480 frame.

The problem part is the zoom in. If the full width of the frame has been used effectively, just zooming in to the centre may not give you the results you want. You may also have to pan across the width of the frame to keep the important parts of the image in view. This is much easier done in an editor that supports keyframing, than something like virtualdub.

  3. Thanks..

    It is NTSC...
It is 16:9 from a MiniDV Sony camcorder...
So that would probably be 4:3 letterboxed...

Just wish my pinnacle would see it as that, and leave the letter boxing there...

Does Pinnacle stretch it ? If so, it isn't letterboxed.

  5. When I am in Pinnacle... I can change the aspect ratio.. 16:9 or 4:3
When I go to 4:3, everyone get's "tall"... and they lose some weight

That is exactly what 16:9 looks like when viewed 4:3.

4:3 can also be represented as 16:12.

Letterbox would result from a vertical 9/12 or 75% vertical resize.

  7. I know...

I was hoping this "16:9" footage was just letter boxed into a 4:3 frame...
And I could just blend 4:3 and "16:9" in the same project (obviously knowing that the video would go to letter box back to full"

    Oh well..
