Seems to me it's more of a Sony quality issue as they reportedly manufactured the batteries in question.

One would be correct in saying Dell Laptops are smoking hot!
(I'm typing this on a Dell Inspiron 6400 Core Duo)
(And I have fire extinguisher at hand)
Dell is hot seller. -
More here.

Somewhat misleading title here... Dell isn't recalling laptops... They're recalling laptop batteries. A customer could continue to use their laptop with either a docking station or simply using the AC adapter. Heck, I'm guessing they could roll the dice and continue using their battery until a replacement arrived....

apple , hp , Toshiba and ibm and fujistu also have had to - or are going to recall batteries on laptops ... apple has a much worse problem reportedly .... it is not specific to dells and the media is a a bit misleading to say the least ...
also not video news -- moving ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I replaced the battery in my wife's Dell per their instructions: It was painless - everything went smooth and fast.
Because of the experience that I've had with Dell (two laptops, two towers at work), I will continue to purchase from them. -
funny thing most of Sony Vaio batteries are made by other companies like Mitsubishi

Most likely Sony battery does not fit Sony laptop. There are many Sony products don't work with other Sony products.

Why can't laptop batteries be standard? I mean I buy a car it's battery dies I go down the store and get a new one. Sure I can get a bigger battery or a name brand battery but as long as it's a car battery it works. The only reason I can come up with is greed. That's the same reason I feel why there are a gazillion different toner/inkjet cartridges with near zero compatibility amongst them.

Outside of the basics (processor, ram, hard drive), most laptop parts aren't interchangeable because there's too much money to be made on aftermarket parts like batteries and such. Where's the incentive for manufacturers?

Yup yup yup (on the laptop battery parts greed thing).
To keep this somewhat on topic, I've got a Latitude D620, and I just checked and both the batteries are good. That is, they're not listed as detonators on Dell's "check to see if your battery will blow up" website.
My 620 is a work replacement for a stolen D500, and I've got an extra battery for the D500 and of course the 620 uses a different battery style.
At least the power supply is the same!
