  1. I have a cousin who just bought a hp slimline with 200gbof hdd.
He told me that his dvd burner rips and burns movies in about 2 to 5 minutes.
Mine takes about 30 min. to an hour to rip and 5 to 10 min. to burn....
    How is that?
    would some please elaborate?

30-minutes to rip, assuming a DVD9, translates into 4x rip speed. Not unreasonable but it's slow. I generally get around 8x rip speed which translates into 15-minutes.

5 to 10 minutes to burn, assuming a single-layer DVDR, is 12x to 6x. Not bad, especially if you're producing quality burns.

If you are multitasking, that might slow you down. That you only have 256 Mb of memory probably doesn't help. Also check to see if DMA mode is enabled for your drive(s). Go into Start->Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->System->Hardware->Device Manage and take a look at your IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Make sure the controller your DVD drive is on is set to Ulta DMA (probably UDMA 2). If you have an IDE hard drive, also make sure that the HD is set to UDMA if it's on the other controller.

If he was stuck in PIO mode he'd only be getting 1x burn speeds. Worth a check though but if he's able to burn a disc in 5 to 10 minutes he's got be in DMA.
