    Hello everybody,

I browsed the forum but could not find an answer to my problem though my guess is it is something basic.

I have a backup of a big DVD movie that consists of a few VOB files and I need to create IFOs for further burning.

Some of the files have a sort of name before the extension (Goldberg.VTS_01_1.VOB; …….2.VOB) while others are just VTS_01_1.VOB.

I cannot remove the “Goldberg” part because I already have VTS_01_1.VOB and others.

Form my experience I know, if I change the file name to something like VTS_03_1.VOB, IFO Edit most likely will not create IFOs for them.

How such combination should be handled? Thank you!

Your best bet IMHO would to be to use some authoring software that will accept authored file (IFO, BUP & VOB) input without re-encoding, and reauthor the disc. TMPGEnc DVD Author is one such authoring software, but I'm sure there's others. It will then recreate the IFO and BUP files properly and reassign the VTS numbers properly also.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Thank you! But I am not quite clear.

The problem is that I only have VOB files. I need to create IFOS.

Besides, even for authring software (I have Nero 7) I still need to remove the "Name" part.

Sorry, if I did not understand you.

So copy each titleset to its own directory, then create IFOs for each using http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/test.htm#ifoedit . This will make each titleset playable as it's own DVD. Then import each into an authoring software to combine them onto the one disc.

If you want, list all the files you have and I'll tell you specifically what files to put in what folders.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Thank you!

It looks like I understand what you mean though it is still confusing. I can play each of them right now.

    The files are:

    Goldberg.VTS_01_1.VOB
    Goldberg.VTS_01_2.VOB
    Goldberg.VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB
    VTS_04_1.VOB
    VTS_04_2.VOB

    OK, create three folders:

    VIDEO1
    VIDEO2
    VIDEO3

Now copy (or move) the files so you get the following:

    VIDEO1
    Goldberg.VTS_01_1.VOB
    Goldberg.VTS_01_2.VOB
    Goldberg.VTS_01_3.VOB

    (Rename these to VTS_01_1.VOB -> VTS_01_3.VOB)

    VIDEO2
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB

    VIDEO3
    VTS_04_1.VOB
    VTS_04_2.VOB

(Rename these to VTS_01_1.VOB and VTS_01_2.VOB)

Then run http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/test.htm#ifoedit on each folder in turn. This will make each folder it's own fully playable DVD.

Then use software like TMPGEnc DVD Author to import each folder in turn, or alternatively use VOB2MPG on each folder if your authoring software of choice only supports MPEG sources.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Thank you!

I believe I can use Nero too, right? I never worked with either one that you mentioned.

I don't really rate Nero as an authoring software, but hey, knock yourself out

All VOB2MPG does is extracts the elements out of the VOB files back to MPEG files. It does'n re-encode or anything like that, but just makes things easier to reauthor in softwares that don't support authored titles for import.
    If in doubt, Google it.

There is a good chance that if you use Nero to author, it will re-encode the files, potentially reducing quality

    Hello everybody,

I would appreciate your further assistance with the DVD.

When I tried to author the DVD with TMPGEnc Author, it could not fit the size 8,5 GB and the software refused to work with it.

I looked through the VOBs in the three VIDEO folders and discovered the following.

    1. Some VOBs that are in VIDEO1 folder are continuation of the VOBs that are in folder VIDEO2. Is it OK?

    2. There are four VOBs in folder VIDEO2 and the movie ends with VTS_01_3.VOB while there is VTS_01_4.VOB that is a part of the movie. That one is really confusing to me.

    3. The movie ends in VTS_01_3.VOB (VIDEO2 folder) but the same file includes some sort of extras about the movie and it plays without sound.

    4. VIDEO3 consists of the extras only. It is actually continuation of the VTS_01_3.VOB (VIDEO2 folder).

What program can I use to cut off the “extras” part of VTS_01_3.VOB (VIDEO2 folder)? Can I use DVD remaker as every VIDEO file is actually a DVD? Can I use DVD Shrinker for the purpose?

BTW, the movie is Ben Hur.

    Thank you!

You need to get the VOBs associated with each titleset together in their own folders. All vobs in a titleset should have the same file names except for the last number.

Personally, I don't think you have enough information about them to try to recover them. You are better off using something like VOB2mpg to demux them back to video and audio streams, and re-authoring properly.

    Thank you for your advice.

If I understood you right you advise to make a big raw chunk from the VOBs and than to create new set of VOBs?

Sorry for the naive question: can I just rename VOBs based on the content of the movie?

I am suggesting extracting the video and audio elements from the vobs, then authoring a new disc. Renaming the vobs is likely to get you into trouble.

Before you go that far, try this.

Put all the vobs back into one folder
Download and install the demo version of Tmpgenc DVD Author
Use the Add Video function, select the first vob in a set, and see what it imports. If it imports an entire title, great. Create a menu and author.

If not, start stripping it all down and building it up again from scratch.
