A lead offer with more than 180 all-digital video and music channels, for $34.95 a month with Verizon FiOS Internet Service or a qualifying voice plan for $39.95 a month as a stand-alone service.

    * More than 20 high-definition channels, with extraordinary clarity and theater-quality sound.

Is this the way to go for HD in Northeast U.S. ?

What's interesting is Verizon's been pulling the old bait 'n' switch. Some customers have been getting mailers for regular DSL. They call Verizon to find - surprise! - the $17.99 DSL is unavailable in their area, but somehow the $34.99 service always is. No mention of service availability is made on the flyers. Verizon has a tendency to use false and deceptive advertising.

That said, who knows. I know some state legislatures are debating whether or not to allow Verizon to compete with cable. It may be ok in Mass. but there is a ways to go in some other states.

Verizon pulls the same crap in California. They sent out flyers offering signups for Fios but, when you call, they only have DSL available.

  5. If you see 'em pulling fiber down your street then you'll be FIOS capable. That's the first thing that has to happen. FIOS tv is now being offered in Northern Virgina and looks very promising. The Fios internet I now recieve is much better than the cable I previously had.

At least they offered me the same price for my calling plan that new customers now receive.

Oh, what I would do for FiOS. I'm not in the coverage area. Someone I know claims to get 30 megabits down.

The higher download speed is nice but where it really tops cable and DSL is the upload speed. The max upload speed for most cable service is 384 kbs up. The standard minimum for FIOS is 2 Mbps up.

I am equally (very) interested in FIOS TV - as I heard the reliability of the signal is much better than dish (Directv or Dish).

Plus, for right now at least, I understand that I could use my TIVOs on this.......

    (come on Verizon! bring it!)

Whatever doesn't kill me, merely ticks me off. (Never again a Sony consumer.)

Fios internet and phone has been active in Tampa almost year or so now depending on the area. Lots of new development in my area so we were on the high priority list I guess.
Tv was just offered a few months ago due to Brighthouse bitchin about Verizon breaking their monoply on us, (their prices reflected it too).
I save almost $50 a month for about the same service I had through the cable and the FIOS is buried instead of elevated so less outage posiblilty during bad weather too.
They get my vote and $$$$! Quality is great too
beware though, they do gig you in monthly charges for HD or DVR boxes and such so I guess what they don't make one way, they make another.
    Motherboard problems, not intermittant anymore!!

  11. I just signed up for a Aug. 3rd FIOS TV install and a couple dvr's. STB's have to be connected to your router via existing coax. Dpending on router type, they may have to install a secondary conversion box between router and coax that converts signal received by router into coax.
The way I understand it, digital guide, PPV, on demand info and such are delivered over the Cat5 and the video is delivered over coax. Therefore a router is needed when using a STB to pick up that info and put it back on your house's coax.

  12. Observation on FIOS - in Verizon sales is incompetent When I got a spam phone call from Verizon on FIOS internet I specifically asked about the status of their television. They did not even know whtat was going on. Two months later, I was visiting my neighbor when he got the spam phone call and said that he doesn't have a computer, but he does have comcast cable. Did they try to sell him cable? ... no ... Did they even known anything about the television wing of their business? ... no ...

  13. TV availabilty will depend on decesions made by the local political commisions and their agreements with providers now that more market freedom has been legislated.

That is also true in Northeast. The towns get one or two free commmunity channel on cable, by granting that cable company (exclusive) right to operate. Most of the time, only the more afluent towns are in position to tell the cable company off, and let competition run their cause.

cable company like Comcast is a very shrew operator, in keeping up high prices and preventing competition.

Absolutely, but when they initially called me, FIOS TV cable had been approved in my county for many months and I wanted info on the status in my neighborhood. Since they were selling internet in my neighbor hood I would hope they would know. It was bad enough when they didn't know when they called me; but when they didn't know or care to follow up with my neighbor 2 months later when he brought up the same subject does seem rather uncoordinated
