If this is not the right forum let me know and I will move it.
I have copied all my home movies(many) to DVD using a good VCR and a DVD recorder. No problems, the content is equal or better than the original VHS. I then copied a few to my PC. I used a program to edit and then save it to a file as HD 720p or HD 1080i. mpg2.( I made two small test files that are 1 minute long, one 720p and the other 1080i to use so it can fit on a normal or DL DVD for testing)
MY QUESTION: How can I copy them to a DVD as is (720p or 1080i) when all programs (I have tried many) will only burn them as DVD HQ. Or is the software light years ahead of the hardware. I have a HD dvd player with HMDI and capable of playing these files and my HDTV native resolution is 1080i.

You are right in that you cannot author this as a DVD and preserve HD specs, however if you search for HD DVD you should find a few posts on creating HD DVD on standard DVD discs.

  3. Try burning the files as data disks (ISO or UDF). The player might play them.
