  1. Hello all!

I recently took my first stab at encoding. I have a bunch of VOB files sitting on the hard drive, and I used Xilisoft's DVD Ripper with option set to DivX and audio at 128 CBR to encode to avi. EVerything worked out fine except the avi file: it's 900mb. I tried to look for some kind of option in the software to encode again with resulting filesize >700 but there doesn't seem to by such a thing.

Can anyone tell me how I go about making an avi file at this filesize?

Thank you for any help and sorry for this question sounding so clueless! I appreciate your patience.

You could try some of the free options, include avi.net, autogk or fairusewizard. They all seem to have much better control than the payware product you have used.

Also, if you wish to preserve the quality, go bak to your original VOBs, rather than re-encoding the avi you created.

  3. Thanks!

I won't reencode the file already encoded with lossy compression, no. I appreciate you taking the extra step to make your advice newbie-proof. Now I'll go try out the software you recommended me. I'm also really enjoying your rants. "Black Bars Are Your Friend" in particular.

    Take care!

  4. One more question.

I have installed Auto Gordian Knot and it's really great the way it simplifies the process for a newb like me. But here's the problem:

I have four consecutively named VOB files sitting here, which contain the entire movie. Is it possible to compress all four into a single 700mb XviD-encoded avi file, or must I compress each to 175mb and join them afterward?

Thanks for the help! (And the patience.)

if you just have the vobs you can join them to one with vobmerge and then convert it.
