Just curious. And this is not necessarily just for SM, but also other rippers that are also very old/discontinued, but you continue to use anyway because it still works good....

Way back around 2001 when i got my first burner, first ripper i used that worked well was smartripper. Its been long since discontinued but i still use it(latest/last v2.41) even today. It just works well. There are very few DVDs it cannot rip, ususally only a select few of the latest.

So anyone else here use it or other OLD rippers like it that are no longer updated?

I still use SmartRipper. I can't remember the version I'm using, but I downloaded it about a year and a half ago. Still works great. And when I can't get SmartRipper to work (I think that's happened twice since I started using it) DVDdecrypter does the job. I downloaded DVDFab decrypter but have never used it - I've never needed to. And the older versions of DVDShrink still work, for me.

I still use dvddecrypter. Its great for vr discs from my standalone recorder.

I've actually somewhat stopped using dvdshrink. I bought Tmpgenc Dvd Author 2.0 which has its own built in transcoder. Works great when I am too high for a single layer with menus and stuff. Even for commercial discs if I reauthor with my own menus this would be good for it once its ripped to the pc.

I don't use SmartRipper all of the time, but there is are some instances where it is the best. In particular, some TV show DVDs cannot be separated by episode in DVDShrink. They show up as one large file. SmartRipper seems to analyze the file structure better and you can rip individual episodes. The current run of News Radio sets and Southpark sets are examples of DVDs that DVDShrink reads as having one large movie rather than 4-8 episodes.

I usually need to start playing a disk with PowerDVD before SmartRipper is able to read the disk.

I have version 2.4.1, which I think was the last version. The log file shows that it came out in 2001. It is not my first ripper but still has some useful function.

I can't recall ever using anything other than Smartripper. I think that
during my *golden* years here in 2001, I may have attempted a brief
exploration of others, but that in the end I didn't like the features or
    whatever.

Smartripper has always been there for me, and these days, I dont' use it
(or any variational tool thereof) for dvd ripping, because I don't go this
on a mass-scale regulary. That interest died a LOOOOONG time ago, when I
realized that in all honesty, *my* dvd ripping true intentions were clear.

These days, I only use smartripper for when I'm debugging a certain video
source and the only way to complete the tests that I'm on about is through
the dvd -> hdd method, smartripper

I think I hear a lot about DVDdecrypter as the main tool of choice, but I
believe that is only on account of that tool featuring a CLI* machanism that
allows a developer (w/ knowledge) to incorporate dvddecrypter method access
to their developing applications, and call dvddecrypter command/functions
to do there thing.. like these All-in-One apps.

Yeah, I still user Smartripper v2.27, though I (from time to time) D/L the
latest version and store (somewhere) on my HDD.

    * MOD's: this should be added to the GLOSSARY.

The closest definition to this is..
    Snip taken from Answers.com: CLI
2 - (Command Line Interface) A user interface to an application that accepts
    typed-in commands a line at a time.

Haven't used smartripper for a while now but back in the day before DVDDecrypter, it was all I used to use.
    If in doubt, Google it.

SmartRipper is still my first choice for ripping. I don't really know why, but since it was the first ripper I ever used I guess it must be some kind of subconscious thing.
