  1. I'm converting files from a PAL DVD to NTSC, and need a bit of help.

    Here's my method:

    1) Rip VOBs with DVDdecryptor, use DVDshrink to save out specific episodes.
    2) Use DVD2AVI to create a frameserve file.
    3) Use TMPgenc to create M2V/MP2 streams (352x480 25fps).
    4) Use DGpulldown to pull down from 25fps to 29.97fps.
    5) Load the video/audio files into DVDLab Pro, and author NTSC disc from there.

Now, it all seems to work fine, and the playback is smooth and in sync - up to a point. On some scenes, there's a bit of "juddering" of the picture, especially on fast moving scenes.

The original VOBs are interlaced according to DVD2AVI, and for the TMPgenc part of the conversion, I use "bottom field first".

I have a feeling that the problem is because of the interlacing - is there a way to sort this out at the DVD2AVI ot TMPgenc stages?

  2. Hi-

Stop using DVD2AVI. It's obsolete and has been replaced by DGIndex. Open the vobs in DGIndex and run the Preview. It'll tell you the field order. Since most of the DVDs I've seen have Top Field First, I suspect your problem is due to you setting the field order incorrectly.

The original VOBs are interlaced according to DVD2AVI...

It just tells you how the video was encoded, and not what the source is like. There's a big difference there, because most PAL movies, although encoded as interlaced, are progressive. The only way to be sure, though, is to examine the frames, but don't rely on what DVD2AVI/DGIndex tells you.

You say you create a frameserve file, so I guess you're either using a VFAPI, or else loading the D2V directly into TMPGEnc. You weren't very clear about exactly how you're frameserving. If for no other reasons than the TMPGEnc resizer being bilinear, and you're letting it do the colorspace conversion, at some point you might consider switching to AviSynth.

I have a feeling that the problem is because of the interlacing

What interlacing? Have you actually seen any interlacing in the original source DVD?

  3. Yes, I load the D2V into TMPgenc to create the ES streams. I guess I'll try changing the field order, and I'll give DGIndex a look.
