Karen Navratil here, I do alot of recording of movies on my stand alone DVD recorder onto
DVD RW Disks. I then copy these files onto my computer and take out the commercials.
I then use TMG software to reauthor the file for DVD and save them to DVD R disks, they come out great. Now I want to start converting some of these movies to Xvid to reduce the size (Especially some of the movies I know I won't watch very often). Any suggestions on easy to use convertors that a NEWBIE can figure out? - Tks so much - Karen
Just starting into video and having very hard time!!

If you've already got TMPG set up, you can use it to output AVI files rather than MPGs ... you might have to load a DivX/XviD encoder if you haven't one already

AutoGK or AVI.NET are about as Newbie-friendly as it gets IMHO.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I think you should try and buy Xilisoft DVD Ripper Platinum 4. It's the best DVD ripper I've found to convert DVDs to AVIs. Just change the resolution to 640x480, the framerate to 23.97 and the profile to "XviD Movie".

I'd say try the freeware alternatives first. If the OP finds what they are looking for and its costs them nothing, it's all good. Traditionally freeware in video-related matters are extremely competent IMHO, and sometimes better than similar Payware products.

Unless this commercial software of which you speak has some magical feature that you can't do easily for free, of course.
    If in doubt, Google it.
