Is there any way to extract the video recorded on hard disk directly in mpeg format, not as vob in dvd format, I know I can do it in analog format, but I mean digital video, via firewire, any way to enable firewire out instead of only in. Any firewire enabled for output via firmware updated or hacking?
    Thanks in advance

Well I don't know about hacking but there is a digital alternative.

You can burn it to dvd, finalize the disc, then rip it to your pc with dvd decrypter (it can read vr disc types).

That is what I've done successfully with my settop liteon dvd recorder. I record it straight to disc (no harddrive on my unit). Then I finalize it. After I finalize it I rip it to my pc then use mpeg2cut2 to cut commercials. Then I take the finalized mpeg and author and burn it. In fact that is exactly what I'm doing right now.

If you don't want to burn and rip then I'd suggest you do a yahoo search for your dvd recorder model number and terms like "hack", "download" and the like.

Just remember this will void your warranty. Once you modify it I don't think you can get service on it afterwards. So burning it to disc and ripping it might be a safer alternative.

Thanks, Yoda313, I think I'll have to do it the way you say, although a little longer and laborious, as I intended to do it straight mpeg to mpeg without burning any dvd.

I've seen another more recent topic from 'visualmagic' (Firewire In and Out? Which models?) about exactly what I would like: firewire out. So, I'll wait for answers to this topic too.

No, there is no way to extract MPEGs from the hard drive of a DVD recorder directly. However, what I do is burn VR-mode DVD-RW of the video and extract from those discs. This way I don't have to finalize discs and can erase the titles from the disc for re-use. Only a few applications can read VR-mode discs however. On my Mac I can use either Toast 7 or PixeVRF Browser.
