hello!! welll thanks for the hint on using fair use!! i have been able to back up my discs, however for some reason i am not sure why some wont work properly. here is my case:
i am using fair use lite, and backing up my dvd's in avi/divx format. the discs come in multiple audio and subtitles so i need to be able to select that when backing up my dvd as well!!
basically i got a dvd, and it contains 4 episodes for example. sometimes, it will back up ech episode as an individual file up to 700 mb. that makes me happy !
however, sometimes, it will chain together all 4 episodes into a single 700 mb file!! YUCK!! thats when things go wrong.
how do i rememdy this? is it the way that the dvd is encrypted? or is there a better program tahn fair use someone can recomend that backs up divx/avi's and lets me select audio and subtitles!!! thanks[/code]

Some episodic discs are authored with a single title, with each episode selected essentially by a chapter menu. You could use DVD Shrink to create new mini discs of the episodes, then process these to avi. You could also set the subtitle and audio tracks you want at this stage.

These days I wait for sales, buy some DVD +R DLs and just run them off. I can't be bothered converting things on my dinosaur computer.....

DVDDecrypter in IFO Mode allows you to selectively rip only certain chapters. With DVDShrink I believe you add the title in reauthor mode, then use the Start/End Frames feature to select say chapter 1 as the start and chapter 3 as the end, then output, then repeat for chapters 4-6, and so on.
If in doubt, Google it. -
Many shows are also coded as both a single unified titleset as well as individual titlesets for each episode. The single title is used for a "Play All Episodes" function while individual episodes are also available. They point to the same VOBs, but they are handled differently depending on what titleset is selected. For instance, if you have six 22 minute episodes, you may have six titlesets of 22 minutes each and one big one of 132 minutes. I have never used Fairuse, but if it provides the option, look for a very long TS and deselect it, while selecting any TS' that are episode-length. That may fix your problem.
