I am using a computer to render MPEG2 video and I am convinced that I don't have good enough codecs on it.
    I'm not sure:
    a) which ones I have exactly
    b) where to get really good ones
    c) how to produce an Mpeg2 quality video that plays on most computers/players

I ran a free program called Gspot to identify my codecs.
Does anyone have an idea if I'm using a below-standard codec?

    Thanks!

I would suggest you start by looking in the tools section. You don't want a codec, you want an encoder.

Good free mpeg 2 encoders include HCEnc, Quenc and bbmpeg
Good payware encoders include ProCoder 2, Procoder Express, CCE Basic, CCE SP, Tmpgenc

All have strengths and weaknesses, and all are capable of producing high quality video.

    Thanks guns1inger, thats helpful.
I'm a bit of a newbie at this, but I render the video using Vegas 6.0, and DVD architect creates the VOBs for me which I burn to make the DVD.

At what stage does TMPGENC come in? Do I render my whole project as AVI then encode it using TMPGENC into MPG2 then pass it to DVD architect?

    Tks,

you are using the Main Concept encoder if you are using Vegas .. you dont really need anything else ... just do as you have been doing except dont use default vegas mpeg2 template - adjust it for YOUR project .....
