  1. A friend of mine just gave me a dell pentium 2 400 mhz notebook computer. the screen on it is very nice. - is a 14". I have a margi dvd card that should work with it. I would like to take this notebook with me when I go to my dorm to surf the web, record and play audio (internet radio) and play dvd's. I am planning on installing a 60 gb 7200 rpm hard drive in it and expanding the memory to 256 mb. Before I start spending $$ I am wondering if this will do the trick?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

400MHz is weak and the display system probably lacks any acceleration for MPeg so you might get by with 320x240 MPeg1 expanded but DVD no.

The display system is probably more important than the CPU MHz. If this notebook was designed to play DVD, maybe maybe you are OK (20% chance?). The only way to find out is to research the model number of that notebook. Was DVD playback a major promotion for this notebook? If you are thinking MPeg4, well think something else. CPU is inadequate.

I remember my 750MHz Vaio notebook which was billed as DVD ready but that was on the edge as far as I'm concerned. I had to pay $300 just for the docking station for that beast.
