I am looking to buy a new DVD recorder and need some advice. Does anyone have Panasonic DMR-ES25S ? I am leaning toward this recorder. I have Panasonic DMR-E20 that was put out in 2002 and I like it other than it doesnt play DVD+R disc that I record off the computer. I hope that Panasonic has fixed this problem. Anyone have this one or one like it or can recommend a better model or brand.
Thanks in advance!

I have the DMR-E50. With the original firmware, it had stunning video quality, which Panasonics were once well-known for. Unfortunately, I was forced to upgrade in order to maintain compatibility with 8X and 16X media. Unfortunately, the video quality is poorer in the new firmware as well. Because manufacturers always try to re-use code to the greatest extent possible, that means modern firmwares for other recorders may also have the lower-quality video as well. It has always had somewhat flat audio. This may not apply to you, but if you aren't in a position in where you can check out the video quality yourself, keep this in mind.
However, if you are planning to do VHS transfer, most Panasonics (though I don't know about the ES25S - there are some exceptions) have some important capabilities that other brands do not. -
I have an ES10 and a ES30V on loan and ES35V on loan. The ES35V is of the same generation as the ES25. I have not had any problems playing dvd+r from the computer on any of them. I use Verbatim dvd+r. The ES10 and ES30V came out last year. The ES15 and ES35V replaced them. The ES25 is the ES15 with HDMI I believe.

How is the recording quality on ES10 and ES35V? Do you have any trouble recording from movie channels (HBO etc)?
Another Recorder I am looking at is LG DVD Recorder DR1F9H. One thing I don't like about it is it doesn't have a S-Video input in the back (that is a dumb mistake). I not familiar with LG dvd recorders. Anyone have any experience with LG recorders? -
Test results for the ES10 and ES35V are posted here,

I have never used these recorders to record HBO. I use them mostly for transcribing old VHS video from relatives. I use a Pioneer 531H with the hard drive for recording TV. Hard drive models offer a lot more flexibility. -
I have a DMR-ES45V (again, same generation, added VHS deck) and they tout better record capability in LP than older models.
As far as inputs, you have an SD Card slot, firewire, composite & s-video in on the front and the back.
Component, composite, s-video and HDMI video outputs. Stereo and optical digital audio (no coax audio though).
I have recorded standard TV shows from cable. Depends on your cable setup as far as tuning, etc. It has a timer for scheduled recording. The people with the ES75 tout the hard drive for recording but it is about $200 more than the ES45V, more for the ES25.
