    Hi,
Since I don't have a 5.1 setup, I'd greatly appreciate it if someone can check out a clip I worked on, in an attempt to create a 5.1 mix. I'm basically looking for someone to tell me whether or not I created a decent mix or if I'm way off.
    The link is here:

It's not copywrited material. It's a clip of my nephew's band.
    Thanks much in advance,
    Justin

    i like the music ......

it is my belief that if you record in stereo - you should stay in stereo -- or at the least if going to 5.1 , make it basically a 5 channel stereo mix w/ the surrounds down by 3-6dB

that being said - the mix sounds pretty good and well mastered ... and not overly processed .. i would not have anything mixed into the center channel at all though ...

    Thanks for the reply...
You said I should only use 5 channels. Were you referring to how you said to leave the center one out?
Also, thanks for the tip on the surrounds. I had no idea you should bring them down so much... eek!
    Thanks again,
    Justin
P.S. - If it's not too much of a bother, would it be okay to provide the same experimental type of short clips in the future? I'll eventually get a 5.1 setup, but until then, I have no clue how it sounds (shrug)

It sounds OK on my stereo headphones. The only way to really tell if it sound right, is to author multiple versions to a DVDRW and play it back on a good sound system. Author it so you can quickly change back and forth between versions.

I just went through all this a couple of months back converting my Jimi Hendrix colection to 5.1 (5.0 actually, because I omitted the LFE channel) and the results came out great , but it was a lot of work. No need to encode the LFE because it will be deleted when it gets downmixed to 2.0 on a stereo system. All I can say, is Voodoo Child really rocks in 5.0!

    Good luck on your quest!
I stand up next a mountain and chop it down with the ledge of my hand........ I'm a Voodoo child.... Jimi Hendrix,

    Well,
There are some songs that I feel pretty safe leaving the LFE out of. However, there are some that I feel really call for leaving it in. Of course, I still need to make sure not to go LFE crazy and make things too bass heavy.
Hm... I have an idea for a sample I could work on that might really work well in the bass department. I should post a link when I'm done with it, for further opinions.
Anyone care to offer song suggestions? I have Sabbath, Rush, Ozzy, Zeppelin and a lot of other classic rock stuff (my favorite genre).
    Thanks again,
    Justin
