All of a sudden I am unable to play recently created backed-up DVDs on my PC. They play on the DVD player which is the "end game" but it is always nice to play on the PC (using Intervideo windvd5) for a variety of reasons. Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem and if so is there a resolution?

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response. Why do you believe the problem maybe with Win DVD? I am able to play the originals with no problems. Also, I am able to play backups that were burned a month or longer ago with no problem

Because you didn't mention being able to play anything in the first post.

Baldrick, Yes I see all of the files one would expect to see for a dvd when in explorer. In fact clicking on those files will allow me to play the dvd. However, for one reason or the other after I back up the dvd my pc is no longer able to read it. Up until 4 or 5 weeks ago I had no problem playing back the "backed-up" copies on my pc. In fact I am still able to play back previously "backed-up" copies (those made 6 weeks and longer ago). Any suggestions you are able to offer are greatly appreciated.

This is weird! I am having the same problem. I have been backing up my legally owned DVDs to a Maxtor 6L300R0 300GB hard drive. This has a single NTFS partition operating in Ultra DMA mode and enabled through MaxBlast. The operating system is W2K. DVDs that were backed up last year play perfectly. Any DVDs backed up since then produce either an ‘Error – Closing Down’ message or ‘Set Parental Setting Password’ dialogue box. Putting in the correct password causes WinDVD 6 to shut down. As an experiment, I used DVD Decrypter to rip the same DVD to the Maxtor and a Quantum ATLAS 10K2 36GB SCSI drive. The latter is also NTFS formatted. WinDVD will play the copy on the Quantum but not the Maxtor. Perhaps the new rips are going over the 135(?)GB boundry and the MaxBlast translation is screwing things up?

An early issue with windvd playback was due to region code playback as found on the drive used to play back dvd ... in some case's , if this drive has been "unlocked" and made region free , it will trip up windvd , and cause numerous error's to be displayed , or unusual behaviour .

Under most condition's , all dvd playback software will play two type's only , the actual drive's region "set" code , and dvd's that have no region code .

This is why having two unit's come's in hand , dvdrom for ripping/playback , dvd burner for burning (region set) .

As for software , try koolplaya + freedvdcodec + ac3filter's + vobsub for dvd playback .

    Problem's persist because of 2 problem's :

1: Dvd player unit need's cleaning , or hardware is defective ... replace if cleaning dose not improve unit performance .

    2:

    Just because "x" month's disc's worked , and latest backup's don't come's down to inferior media ... some unit's will play anything ... other's are more sensitive .

When reporting such issue's , consider the fact you may be using a brand new batch of media , and it is this batch that is inferior in quality .
