Intel is onto a good thing with the Conroe line of processors - AMD doesn't really have anything that matches it, yet.

Here's where I make my decision - $$$$$ & will it improve my existing programs. Eg: If it's 500x better than my current processor, but it doesn't improve how my M$ Office programs run when that's all that I use; why the heck do I need it? If it causes my programs to run 500x better, but has a price tag in which I have to draw long term financing for or sacrifice my child's college tuition, I'm not getting it anytime soon. If it's 2x's faster and is 25% of the cost of the other processor, There's a good chance it'll end up in my next system.
