It is only needed if you are using +R media and trying to make them more compatible with standalone players. Bit Setting makes the disc appear as a dvdrom.

You wouldn't. Now you might want a DVD+/-R(W) or DVD+R(W) burner with bit setting. Blank DVD-Rs come with the lead-in already written with the booktype set to DVD-R. The lead-in for a DVD+R is written when the DVD+R is. By default, a writer will sent the booktype to DVD+R. However, if your writer supports bitsetting then you have the option to have set the booktype for DVD+Rs to DVD-ROM. This improves playback compatability for DVD+Rs to that of DVD-Rs.

Your question in it's simplest interpretation is not really valid. Unless you are saying why should I buy a -R only format burner instead of a +R format only burner. Then I would say just buy a muti format model if you are worried about it.

Booktype setting (Bitsetting) is a feature of the + format only.

One of my Apex standalone's won't see +RW unless I set the booktype to dvdrom. Fortunately, my NEC 1300 with herrie's holiday firmware v1.08 let's me set it. My LG 4163b sets the +R to dvdrom but won't do it with +RW. I kept my older NEC just so I can quick format and set the booktype for +RW. I can still burn them on my LG and it won't override the code unless I reformat.

I do not use -RW so can not say if that format would be accepted by my Apex in spite of the so called missing feature of the - format. From what I have read the -RW discs would probably work with no problem (the -R work fine). The only reason I don't use -RW is that my NEC had some issues with my first purchase so I switched to +RW and stayed with them since. It's not a knock on the format just the limitations of my first burner and one brand of - media in my early experience with DVD burning.
