I have an SVCD that my uncle had offered and now wants converted to a DVD. I have saved the files to my computer in a .bin and .cue file, and have also extracted the files to a folder called "MPEGAV" which contains 8 files named AVSEQ01.DAT ...to... AVSEQ08.DAT. I am somewhat unfamiliar with these .dat format files, and could use some pointers here. What I really want is to keep the files the way they are, and just make them playable on a DVD. When the SVCD was authored, it has a nice menu, background sound, and chapters. Is there an easy way to convert these files and play them/burn them onto a DVD?

Thanks for any help you can provide....

I use ConvertXToDVD or the freeware DivxToDVD for a easy conversion. Or you can try SVCD2DVD, or look through the CONVERT guides for SVCD to DVD conversions. <<<<<<

Unfortunately SVCD resolution (480x480) is out of spec for DVD. You can either use it as-is and hope that it works in your player (it might esp. if yours plays SVCD) or you can re-encode it to a DVD resolution like 352x480. Your choice. Look up SVCD to DVD in the guides section over there <<<<<<<.

I'd try svcd2dvdmpg first. But AVSEQnn.dat indicates a VCD, not SVCD? AFAIK, a SVCD contains AVSEQnn.mpg. If so (if it is VCD), extract the mpg with vcdgear, then just author the resulting mpg with TMPGEnc DVD Author as DVD.

I would do a step more: Load those dat files (obviously VCD files....) to Virtualdub mpeg2 and ad a couple of filters, like msu smart deblocking, so to eliminate some of the macroblocks.

If they are VCD, sorry about that... I can't say I'm an expert at conversion... ONe of my questions though is... will doing the encoding keep the menus intact? Or will I need to do that on my own?

    Thanks,

Nope, the VCD menu is gone. You ought however to be able to use the mpg making up the VCD menu as background for your DVD menu.

  8. Also should note that VCD is a DVD compliant file so no reencoding of the video should be required. The audio may need to be upped to 48KHz to be compliant.

True, but many authoring apps (like TMPGEnc DVD Author) takes care of that business "transparently".
