I did some searching on here and did not really find my answer, so I will ask it here.

I have a PAL DVD that I want to convert to NTSC.

I tried a method that worked fo rme once before and that was:

Use Mac The Ripper to rip to a single VOB
Use MPEG Streamclip to demux to .m2v and .ac3
Render the new .m2v in FCP and encode from there.

Problem is, with this clip, unlike the one I did it with before, it made the picture all jagged and wattery looking.

I had heard you could do it in Toast 7, so I dragged over the VIDEO_TS folder and exported the video as NTSC DV. Same jagged look.

I also have Jes Deinterlacer 3, but have not tried that. When I tried it with 2.73, it errored out after an hour.

I know I will lose some video quality, but I have a good source, so it won't be that bad. I am trying to avoid this wattery look and also not have the speed change (it is live music)

So should I try Jes Deinterlacer? If so, should I encode from the VIDEO_TS? or From the .m2v?

Is there a way to do this without going to NTSC DV and then reencoding to .m2v? Like VIDEO_TS to VIDEO_TS or .m2v to .m2v, just chaning format? I want to keep the quality as high as possible obviously.

If I use Jes, what should I set it at? I am relatively new to that program, so any help is appreciated. Thanks

I also have access to Compressor 2, but hear that takes forever with questionable results.

MPEG2 Works can do this conversion. So can Toast 7.

Is the preferred way to convert from .m2v or right from the VIDEO_TS folder. Anyone have any experience with these and know which does the better job?

  4. i think the jagged edges will always be there, i've used mpeg2works to convert from PAL to NTSC without having to convert to DV and without using Toast to reencode which is god aweful slow...

the one I did in Final Cut pro before, the jagged edges weren't that noticeable because the source wasn't that good to begin with. This one was a mint source, so they really stood out. i ended up getting MPEG2Works and it did a pretty nice transfer. A lot better than FCP for sure, though it was a tad dark
