  1. All,

Had a question that has been bugging me for a while now...

After a lot of reading up over time, I came to the conclusion that JVC VCR's offer one of the best playback quality on VHS tapes and since I am converting my live shows collection to DVD, I figured i would invest in a JVC VCR..

I went for the JVC DVHS 30000 unit because I felt it gave me the best of all worlds - VHS, SVHS and also HDTV recording capability...plus it had all the picture enhancing/cleaning circuitry(I automatically assumed it has a TBC built in)...

When I got the VCR (which was early last year), I played back the tapes and I had some concerns...The picture, while much more stable and cleaner in terms of color correction (reduced bleeds and evened them out better), seemed to suffer from a "wash out" effect as well...By that I mean - The VCR did some edge correction by smoothing the picture out (I chose default setting for picture sharpness to keep things equal) and whats worse is that it seemed to dull the whites and blacks...somehow blacks and whites do not have that nice crisp contrast and depth - there was that greyish green tinge...they are just "dull"...

Now when I play the same tape on my regular Sony VCR, I see the picture is a lot brighter...but its not that stable or clean as the DVHS playback...

So I have this dilemma, I am not able to get a picture that has the best of both worlds...Anyone else feel the same way about the DVHS VCR playback and is that the same issue with the other JVC VCR's...

Curious to hear feedback frm other folks...

I would agree that the JVC VCRs with the Digipure TBC/DNR system stabilize but also soften the image. I notice this on my JVC 7600 and 9600 VCRs compared to my older 6800, 5400, and 4900 units.

    You may find this interesting...

I bought a JVC sr-v10u about 3 years ago. It did wonders for playback of problem tapes, which was why I bought it. But for commercial tapes in excellent condition it was disappointing. My old panasonic VCR's playback was much crisper and detailed. Unfortunately it just died after 8+ years; repairing it was unreasonable costly and with uncertain results.
