    Video input format?
    Project settings?

Is this a DV AVI export? If not what?
    Did you let it finish?

    Three formats to understand

    source format
    project format
    export format

If they differ you can be in for long, sometimes destructive renders.

    What kind of avi?

    uncompressed? Huffyuv? DV?

"File" - "Export Timeline" - "Movie"
Then choose codec in "settings" <---- MSDV is in there

    Did you render the timeline?

You never ident the source file or project format.
Try a preview and see if it plays.
Try saving in the project format first.

It would be under export movie settings (video) under movie under export. If not just save the timeline to your project format or uncompressed and open in a divx encoder.

For example: Export it to Huffyuv, then encode that to divx in virtualdub.

Mine has the divx codec in the settings codec list. You may need to install the divx codec first.

    PS: Another look here
