are there any other formats i can burn to a cd-r so it will play in a dvd player besides an svcd or vcd such as can i burn a avi.xvid to a cd-r and will it play in my dvd player or can i burn an iso to cd-r ?

You can only do xvid/divx if its specifically says its divx compatible. Then you can just burn the avi file. Otherwise you'll have to convert it to vcd/svcd/dvd to watch it.
