mencoder non-functional?

I'm encountering problems using the version of mencoder I was instructed to download for FFMpegX. On an Intel Mac, I get the following:

I get the same thing on any file I throw at it.

This is certainly not the ffmpegX binary, which says

Sorry, I'll take it up with the mplayer group. Do you know of a good place to post such questions?

Also, given that your FFMpegX is somewhat dependent on that component working, I thought you'd like to know...
