Hi, I downloaded some AVIs and each one played ok from my hard drive. I saved them to DVD-RW, verifying the burn, as a multisession data DVD.

Some days later I tried to play one or two. Of 6 on the DVD, only one still played. The others gave various errors on different software players or caused the player to hang.

The avi'swould copy back from the DVD-RW to the hard drive without errors, suggesting the CRC is atill valid.

Any suggestions? How could the data be corrupt give these checks?

I'm presently downloading one again to do a comparison with the copy on the DVD, but it will take a while.

    Thanks, dal987.

    Thanks...

Copied to the HD- no, just the same as on the DVD. Reports of corrupt headers, invalid file, missing filters...

    - and they were fine before being copied onto the DVD, which is in pretty good shape.

The one that plays from the DVD plays if it's copiedto the HD (of course).

I had the same problem with a film I copied onto another DVD RW- I thought that was a one-off, downloaded it again, burnt with verification, checked it worked. Now when I look again, it doesn't play. It's now on the same DVD as one avi that does play, and several that don't.

However, I have another DVD-RW with a coupe of AVIs on it and they are fine.

I'm wondering if somehow it depends on exactly what sort of avi it is. But that makes no sense to me- if the data's intact, it should play, shouldn't it?

How did you verify ? File verification is worth about 3 pinches of chicken sh*t. I read test the discs with DVD Info Pro, and don't seem to get any problems with reading or playing back from them. I would not trust file verification as far as I could comfortably spit out a rat.

Hi, Nero 7 verification after burning the DVD-RW.

In some cases I also used Foldermatch CRC+ MD5 - this after some experiences with a bad set of 3 DVD-RW's bought in China, supposedly Sony, but all of those gave read errors. The ones I'm using are Verbatim (UK) and a different set of Sony ones that have never failed verification.

From the bad DVD's, It was noticeable that copying from them was flagged as a CRC error. So if the data on these DVD's is not valid, why would there be no CRC error in copying from them?

Maybe I'll know more when I get another copy of the file I burnt on to one to compare.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
