  1. how do I go about cropping the boundaries without encoding the file. for example I have a movie from my eyetv 500 which I exported using mpeg program stream. the resulting file mpeg 2 720p which is accepted by my DVDSP2 in the HD mode when I demux. The only problem is that the frames have this annoying noise at the top 8 or six pixels. how does a person go about editing the image only without having to reencode?

If you plan to watch this on tv, then you won't see the noise there, as it is in the overscan area, the outer few % that is supposed to be not visible.
If you really want to remove it, the video has to be re-encoded, losing some quality in the process. ffmpegX has a Crop section in the Filters tab for that.
No cropping without encoding, I'm afraid. Even if it was possible, you'd have to crop in whole macroblocks, which is multiples of 16, iirc.

You don't edit the image or it will encode. You find a player that zooms or watch on a TV which always masks 5-10%.

  4. there is an application which has a crop feature for QT movie files that can crop the finished movie file but not mpg files. the said application is called QT Sync. When an mpg file is passed to the app the crop feature is disabled.

I was just wondering if a similar app was available for mpg files.

    No, it isn't.
I just tried it with an MPEG1 File and it worked fine. (Couldn't try MPEG2, but it should work fine too. Write me a bug report, if it doesn't. michael at qtsync dot com )

  6. the cropping tools are disabled (dimmed) when mpg files opened in QT Sync that appear in the track editor as m2s. The source of the files are exported from EyeTV 500 and converted Tivo files.
