I just read this on pcworld I think. It was right after the Zune press releases the other week.

So now the zune will play wma, aac and mp3 but not copyrighted drm wma files from non-microsoft stores??? That sucks!! I would have considered possibly investing in a zune. A 30gb 3 inch video audio player is interesting.

But now that it won't play my yahoo music files nor the subscription files I don't know about it.

It willl probably be $300 or so for the initial model. I was also considering getting a Nintendo Wii this fall.

I think now my mind is made up and I'll try to get a Nintendo Wii instead.

What a shame the ZUNE looks really good but not if I can't play my wma purchases I've already made.

    Zune is doomed.

It has a bigger screen then an iPod. This the the only feature I see that I like.

I'd rather get the Nintendo Wii too. This looks to be doomed. People that have bought music online have done so through Napster, Yahoo!, or iTunes Music Store and this thing won't play music from either. One would have to repurchase their library. That will not sit well at all.

Well it sounds like they are going the Napster route so you will be RENTING your music most likely. I assume they will offer the ability to purchase also of course.

I purchase very little music through the iTunes store though I do purchase some, mostly I purchase my own CDs (usually from half.com) and rip them into iTunes. If something better then the iPod comes along (not holding my breath for the near future) there is no reason I can't move to it with very little loss of music.

Not that many would really want to go through the hassle, but isn't part of the idea behind the online music services that you're 'LICENSING' the music rather than buying it? So shouldn't you be able to re-download a Zune compatible file with whatever DRM they use under the same license without having to repurchase the music?

Unfortunately no. What PLAYFORSURE is supposed to be about is having a world of wma players that can play encrypted files. Sadly ms is dumping that from Zune. So you can't "redownload" it.

That would be good though - if you could show your "receipt" and get a new copy of it for that format....

Since PlaysforSure was partly sponsored by M$, they'd be fools not to work something out with content providers. For example with Audible.com, when I purchase a download, I have a choice of 'formats' (which are really just bitrates), but I don't think it would be difficult to add the option for Zune compatible files to a user's download library.

Boy I'm torn now. I see there are creative video/mp3 players for $250 with 30gb of space the same as the zune but I believe these are playforsure compatible.

I'd love to have that much space and video capability. But I'd also like to have the WII.......

Gonna have to do some heavy coin flipping between now and Christmas

Don't you already have an mp3 player? If so, then you got your answer there. get the Wii and use the mp3 player you got now until you can get the second generation Zune.

I just saw the creative zen vision 30gb model at bestbuy tonight. WOW! The screen is beautiful and bright! The thing was brilliant even in a store setting. And it has an fm tuner and can record fm stations. It plays mpeg 1, 2 and 4 and divx of course. I'm impressed. And for $250 its the same price as the upcoming zune but its playforsure compatible.

I think I'm saving up for one and not the WII. I really don't play video games much anymore. I'm more of a more movie watcher these days. And I use my mp3 player every day and with 30gbs I'd be able to put all of my mp3s on there and my subscription music from yahoo. Then I'd have room left over to dump my previous days recording of DEEP SPACE NINE on the player! And it has video out

I think I'm getting one for Christmas for myself If not that particular model definetely one that plays video.

I'm gonna look into a toshiba gigabeat and see how those compare.....

Yeah i know the wii is gonna be fun but I don't know if I'll ever use it enough to enjoy it. I mean I eventually traded in my xbox becuase I didn't really play it. But I use an mp3 player at work every day.......

EDIT - I found a better option - the archos 404 is yahoo music compatible! And its around 250.00. Its at compusa - at least the website.

I think that may be my new mp3 player come the end of the year It can do line in video recording but you need to buy an adapter - I don't care about that since I can do that on my pc. But it can read VOB files!! I can rip a dvd and plop it on the player! At 30gb I'd have plenty of space for my music and still fit a few full size single layer dvds on it!

Yeah, the mp3 player would be better. As for me, I spend most of my time at home with the little one. Boy, playing that tennis game against her on a 51" is going to be sweet.

As I said I don't really play games that much anymore. Oh I do but not hours and hours.

Here is what I just wrote in an edit above:

I still have my 30gig iPod video and still love it. I just can't see myself switching to something else unless it was a MAJOR difference.

Yahoo music? Blah I rip my own CDs. NO DRM, No tied ti anyone.
