I've been using Ritek G04 DVD-R single layer for a while, but just bought a Pioneer dual/double layer burner. I did buy some Verbatim DVD+R DL media for "special occasions," however, I still plan to use single layer media. Apparently, Ritek is not so great anymore, and I've always heard good things about Taiyo Yuden. So, is there a difference in quality between TY 8x and 16x? Speed isn't important to me, just quality.

You didn't mention what Pioneer drive you bought, but in general Pioneers do well with TY 8x or 16x, so take your pick.

It's a DVR-111D:

It hasn't been installed yet. I just moved, and it's in a box somewhere, lol. Right now I have a Sony DRU-510a.
My question was related to the quality of the 8x vs. the 16x. For example, Ritek G04 was good, but the brand's quality has dropped since I've been away from this forum, which is why I want to try another brand. Verbatim used to be considered garbage, but now is one of the best. So, is the 16x still made using Taiyo Yuden's previous quality, or have they possibly taken a step back? -
Fuji branded Ritek G05's *sucked* in my DVR-109, but of course everyone's hardware will react differently - esp with (slightly) different codes and different burners. I doubt there will be a big difference between 8x and 16x TY's - both great discs - just get whatever is cheaper I guess.

Honestly, for what little burn time difference there is on the Pio 111; I'll continue to use TYG02 as long as I can find it. By most peoples's standards I'm probably splitting hairs but I just get better results that make me feel better with the 8x media. In the DVD+R arena here in the USA your only 16x option is MCC004. The TY T03's have not been available to date AFAIK. Yuden00.T02's are excellent at 8x or 12x so I really see no problem there anyway.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I bought 200 of these "TG02" Yudens:

They seem to have a good reputation, and the price is decent. I guess I could've saved a little and not gotten the "cake boxes," but in my experience, after buying my G04s in the shrink wrap, the shrink wrap can rip during shipping. The DVDs only got minor scratches, but even minor scratches bother me.
Sort of off-topic, but years ago I bought Case Logic folders for my entire CD collection for use in my car. Many of these CDs are 24k remastered gold CDs that now sell online for $150. Anyway, even though I avoided the zipper when removing CDs, the plastic center crease dividing the top row from the bottom put some nice gouges into quite a few of my CDs. Since then, I've only used jewel cases.
