Hello car guru's,
Got a little problem I was hoping you could shed some light on before I start ripping everything apart.
I have a '79 camaro with a 4 speed manual transmission. This morning, I put the car into first gear and attempted to drive, except I couldnt move. RPM's go up but nothing. The tires dont spin or anything. I took it out of first gear, put it into reverse, took it right back out and now I cant get into any gear except reverse. The car doesnt roll in reverse either.
This a problem with the clutch or the tranny?
Any help would be appreciated.

My first guess would be tranny - somethings f'd up with the linkage. May be something as simple as a pin but probably difficult to fix.
A friend of mine had a similar problem with an old Cortina (years back) - a 79 cent pin but had to drop the whole tranny to get it replaced. -
You mean the linkage from the shifter? Never thought of that actually.
Dropping the tranny isnt a big deal really. That can be done fairly easily. Im just worried its something inside the tranny that needs work. I was pretty sure it wasnt the clutch though, but second guessed it a little. -

Yes, from the shifter... Should be easy to see if something's broke external to the tranny - if something is broke internal then it may be more difficult to troubleshoot.

Bent shift fork... shifter linkage...
All possibilities.
Now get out there and fix it! -
Oh I'll be getting out there ... on the weekend. After a 10 hour work day, the last thing I feel like doing is crawling under a car haha.
Hopefully no rain will be in the forecast. Damn spring time.

RuPaul is a Tranny too.
Definitely sounds like it's down at the trans. Hopefully, it may just be about as simple as replacing the clutch pack. The linkage may be easy to change too, but it all depends on what's wrong and the car. I've never worked on that vehicle, but I have seen the linkage on many vehicles. some are easy, others .......you're better off getting a new vehicle IMO. :/

Sounds like a bad synchro. Reverse is an unsynch'd gear in many transmissions, especially the Saginaws and Super T-10's commonly found in those older Camaros. Is it all original or the more common garden variety Frankenstein that's been wrenched on by a dozen or so different owners?

Some of the car isnt original but not through any of my own doing. It IS however a Saginaw tranny. Whether or not it is orignal, that I am not sure. Never really researched it.

A hairline crack in one of my synchros was enough to lock up my gearbox on a cavalier. Required a complete stripdown and rebuild.

Nothing special, I guess it was just an imperfection/flaw in the component. I would think the crack had been propergating for a while until it cracked all the way through, the syncro opened up slightly and caused it to sieze. Like I said though it was only a hairline crack not initially obvious but enough to sieze my gearbox.

It doesn't take much. When I was in school for shop class we had to take apart a 2 stroke lawnmower engine and put it back together. I got mine to start up and run fine. However, someone got a spot of on a piston. It dried. When they put it together, they didn't kerosene bathe the parts and dry them off. Idiots! They also didn't lbue the parts before putting them together. They started their motor and it ran fine,.....for about 15min. Then it started clacking and siezed.
I thought our teacher was gonna load in his pants.
