Your best bet is to do a search on google then try a few actually to see what you like cause everyone has a different liking.Just my 2 cents

What would you like this mixer to do?

    What is your budget?

  4. good question, what would you like it to do?, what´s your PC/Audio/Video setup?, how are you connecting what you have right now?, inputs, outputs, digital, analog, both, etc...
Is mixing several tracks (or sources) in realtime you´re after?, beyond Premiere´s Timeline? (you say you ´re not comfortable with the plug-in digital processors, do you mean as audio effects? or the use of premiere´s mixer window?..I know, it can be tricky)

    Well no budget given.

You can easily put an audio mixer on the capture input. Many use a Mackie 1202 or cheaper Eurorack UB802. There are more expensive analog to digital mixers that work 16/24bit and output USB2.

To externally mix audio realtime, you first need a realtime editing environment.

This can be video and audio, requires multitrack realtime hardware and uncompressed RAID ...
    start here http://www.videoguys.com/realtime.htm

or fixed video with multitrack audio hardware.

thank you very much for the reply...but what I dont understand is...how do I couple the hardware mixer with the capture card...are there special capture cards built for this purpose...

also, what multitracker are we talking about here...I guess this means that I will not be using the multitracker in premiere if I decide to go this route....right..

Connect sources, monitors and sound card I/O to the mixer.

Premiere Pro V2 is offering this list with ASIO support

Like I said above, if you want a realtime editing environment, you need to invest in realtime hardware and software + upgrade to Premiere Pro 2 if you want ASIO.

We are probabably talking several thousand dollars here.

Alternative is to edit video non-realtime and edit audio separately in realtime using a multitrack audio editor (e.g. Digidesign or others). That is how films and TV shows are editied. Audio dialog replacement (ADR) happens after the film/video is edited with rough audio tracks.

Typical for NLE style editing you use the mixer to capture audio to multiple audio clips in the bin, then arrange/edit your audio tracks on the timeline, then render. Realtime preview is simulated so you can play with settings and undo until you get it right.
