While Asian countries are largely accused of allowing bootleggers to produce and distribute massive numbers of illegal DVDs, authorities in the U.K. said Wednesday that they had shut down an operation capable of producing 60,000 DVDs per day. Britain's Guardian newspaper said that the operation, operating in the Leyton section of east London, had 300 different film titles on hand at the time of the raid, including copies of last weekend's blockbuster, Ice Age 2. "All of the machines were running when we came in, making copies of Ice Age 2, and they were probably running them 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Michael Buchan, a senior investigator with the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), told the newspaper. Police estimated that the factory could yield daily sales of nearly a half million dollars.

Shit, busted
-
it wold be tough to do 60,000 copies a day there -- i thought it was a pressing plant ...
that is no comparison to the asian operations -- which use some of the latest high speed pressing machines ...
the news people are sometimes such twits"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
in fact -- looking at the pictures , they would be lucky to do even 10,000 copies a day in the best case ...
(16 x 8) x 20 minutes per run ... then the time to reload (by hand)"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -

If they can supposedly produce 60,000 a day then that's 2500 an hour. Let's say it took 15 minutes to burn (including swapping) then that would mean they would need around 625 burners. Most of those machines have 10 burners so they would around 63 machines
60,000 is still probably over exaggerated to make the bust sound more impressive but I bet it can still put out quite a few
Like I've always said, why don't companies do this and beat the pirates at their own damn game? -

So do they have DVD extras?
A girl at work bought what she thought was a cheap legit copy of Fantastic 4 on DVD at a swap meet (stupid girl). The only bonus she got was a silhouette of someones head walking across the bottom of the screen during the opening of the movie.

Like I said I don't know how long it takes to burn a DVD @16X due to never burning one. Surely it's got to be less than 10 minutes as I remember 4X used to take me 15 minutes. Even so, that's a full 4.37GB DVD and would these copies be full discs?
I wouldn't think to take out the discs and fill them again should take long at all, say a minute. Take one out with your left hand onto a holder and put a blank in with your right and shut the tray and do the one below
maybe they should have bought one of these HERE

the thing in the middle is the controller ... those are real basic cheap towers , fully manual operation

Repeat at the next machine. It probably takes 2 min to unload and reload one of those machines, so 4 machines to a person that does nothing but load & unload the machines. 1 person is pulling of 8 discs every 2 minutes. so in a 12 hour day 1 person could do 2880 burns. This is with a burn lasting 8 minutes.
At $10 a copy, you've made the cost back in those 1st 4 machines PLUS a major profit. Wouldn't take a long time to expand that type of operation.
That's 1 person, 4 machines, in one 12 hour day. -

16x's speed burns take about 5:30-6:00, thats about 240 burns in 24 hours.
If this was a 24 hour operation they could clear 10,000 easily with only 42 burners.
From the photo I estimate that they had at least 200 burners.snappy phrase
I don't know what you're talking about. -
60000 burns a day is not an unreal number for the amount of equipment shown there. And that's probably not all of the equipment.
